Water Pressure Repairs
in Ballito

Water pressure repairs in Ballito begin with a gauge rather than an opinion, because the same weak shower can be a blocked aerator, a valve somebody left half shut, a failed pressure reducing valve or a genuinely undersized supply. Those cost wildly different amounts, and only one of them needs pipework.

Fix Weak Water Pressure

Say whether a single fitting is affected or every one of them, and flag anything that changed just beforehand. Those two answers rule out most of the expensive possibilities immediately.

What We Check, In Order

Cheapest and most likely first. Most pressure calls are solved before we reach the bottom of this list.

Aerators & Cartridges

The last four millimetres of the system, and the first thing to block after any work on a main. Minutes to clear and frequently the whole answer.

Isolating Valves

Half-shut stopcocks and isolators left closed after previous work. Free to fix and surprisingly often the cause of a whole-house complaint.

Pressure Reducing Valves

Tested rather than assumed. A PRV that has failed internally tends to fail closed, which reads exactly like a supply problem.

Corroded Supply Runs

Old galvanised pipe closing up from the inside. A real cause, an expensive one, and the reason it is checked last rather than first.

Hot Side Only

Weak hot with normal cold points at the geyser, its inlet control or a scaled outlet rather than at the supply. See geyser repair.

Pumps & Storage

Booster sets and tanks sized and quoted only once a restriction has been ruled out, because a pump pushing at a blockage solves nothing.

What A Repaired Main Sends Down The Branch Afterwards

There is a particular kind of pressure complaint that arrives a day or two after the water has been off in your street, and it catches people out because the timing seems to exonerate the repair. The water came back. It ran clear after a minute. And then the shower was never quite the same again. Homeowners generally conclude their pipework must have been disturbed, which is expensive thinking, and it is almost always wrong.

Some of Ballito's older reticulation is asbestos cement, and the operator is straightforward about it. Siza Water's operations manager Kobus Fourie attributed the recurring bursts at the Leonora Drive and Dolphin Crescent intersection specifically to ageing AC pipework in that section, with a replacement budgeted for the 2026 financial year. AC behaves differently from plastic or ductile iron: it does not weep at a pinhole, it cracks, and a crack tends to become a burst rather than a drip.

What matters for your shower is not the burst but the refill. When a repaired main is recharged, water enters a drained pipe at speed and scours it on the way through. Everything sitting in that section, the fine grit from the excavation, the loose scale, the sediment that had settled quietly over years, gets lifted and carried along. It travels until it meets a restriction. The first restriction in the entire chain is the aerator at the end of your tap, or the cartridge inside your mixer, and both are designed with openings measured in fractions of a millimetre.

So the debris stops there, packs, and the flow drops. From the chair in your kitchen this is indistinguishable from a failing supply, and if you call somebody who quotes without measuring, you may well be sold one. The actual repair is to unscrew the aerator, rinse it out, and screw it back on. On a mixer it means pulling and flushing the cartridge, which is a little more involved and still not a large job.

The practical rule: after any work on a main near you, clean the aerators before you replace anything at all. Take the aerator off every affected outlet, run the tap hard for thirty seconds into a bucket to flush the line, and refit it. If that restores the flow, you had grit and not a plumbing fault, and it cost you nothing but a few minutes.

After work on a main near you

Do these in order. Most people never need to go past step three.

  • Unscrew the aerator from the affected tap
  • Run the tap hard for thirty seconds
  • Rinse the aerator out and refit it
  • Repeat on every outlet that feels weak
  • Still weak everywhere means test the PRV

How A Pressure Call Runs

Measure, eliminate, then quote. In that order and no other.

A Gauge On The Tap

An actual number at the boundary and at the outlet, so the conversation starts from a measurement.

One Outlet Or All Of Them

The question that separates a five minute job from a serious one, asked before anything is opened.

Cheap Causes Ruled Out First

Aerators, isolators and cartridges before pipework, because they are more common as well as cheaper.

No Pump Sold On A Guess

A booster is quoted only once a restriction has been eliminated, never as a first answer.

Water Pressure In Ballito: FAQs

What it costs to diagnose, why pressure sags in season, and when a pump is the wrong purchase.

What does it cost to fix water pressure in Ballito?

The first visit is a call-out plus a measurement, and that is deliberately the cheapest thing on this page. A gauge on an outside tap and a few minutes of checking tells us whether you have a supply problem, a valve problem, a fitting problem or a genuine pipework problem, and those four have wildly different prices. Quoting a pressure job without measuring it first is guesswork, and guesswork in this trade always resolves in the plumber's favour rather than yours.

The pressure dropped suddenly after work was done in my road. Why?

Because of what a repair puts into the water rather than what it takes out. When a main is opened, repaired and refilled, the refill pushes grit, rust and disturbed sediment down the branch lines at speed. That material arrives at the first restriction it meets, which is almost always the aerator screwed into the end of your tap, or the cartridge inside a mixer. The pipework is fine. The last four millimetres of it are full of debris, and that is a ten minute job rather than a repipe.

Is asbestos cement pipework really still in the ground here?

Yes, in sections of the older reticulation, and the operator says so openly. Siza Water's operations manager Kobus Fourie attributed recurring bursts at the Leonora Drive and Dolphin Crescent intersection to ageing asbestos cement pipework, and confirmed a budgeted replacement of that section in the 2026 financial year. AC pipe is not a health risk to you in drinking water at these levels, but it is relevant to pressure, because it fails by cracking and every crack, repair and refill sends more debris downstream.

My shower is weak but the kitchen tap is fine. What does that mean?

That it is almost certainly not your supply. Water arriving at the property arrives at one pressure for everything. If one outlet is weak and the others are normal, the restriction is at or near that outlet: a blocked shower rose, a failing mixer cartridge, a partially closed isolating valve under the basin, or a kinked flexible connector. All four are cheap. Of every way a house can lose pressure at a single outlet, these are both the likeliest to be responsible and the cheapest to put right.

Would a booster pump solve my problem?

Sometimes, and rather more often than not it is the wrong purchase. A pump added to a system with a restriction in it just pushes harder against the restriction, and a pump added to a supply that is genuinely low at certain hours will run itself hard for nothing. Before anybody sells you one, the pressure should be measured at different times of day and the restriction ruled out. If a pump is genuinely the answer, we will say so, and if it is not we will say that too.

My pipes bang when I close a tap. Is that a pressure problem?

It is related but it is a different fault. That noise is water hammer: a column of moving water stopped abruptly with nowhere for the energy to go. Modern lever mixers close far faster than the old screw-down taps the pipework was often designed around, which is why this tends to appear after a bathroom is refitted. The fix is usually a properly sized arrestor and some pipe clipping rather than anything to do with the pressure itself.

Does a pressure reducing valve help or hurt?

It helps, provided it is the right one and it is actually working. A PRV protects everything downstream of it from spikes, and a failed one is a common and completely invisible cause of a whole house losing pressure, because when the internal seat goes it tends to fail closed rather than open. If your property has one and the pressure has dropped everywhere at once, the valve is the first thing worth testing and it is far cheaper than what most people assume is wrong.

The pressure is fine in winter and poor over Christmas. Why?

Because the town's demand more than doubles in those weeks. The concession serves 70 000 to 80 000 people on a normal day and over 200 000 at the height of the season, and a distribution network being asked for that much more will sag at its extremities and at height. If your property is at the top of a rise, that is where you will feel it first. This is not a fault in your plumbing and no amount of work inside your house will change it.
