When people compare plumbers they compare hourly rates, which is reasonable and almost entirely beside the point. The phrase that actually determines what you pay on a small job is usually printed after the rate, in smaller type, and reads: or part thereof. Those three words mean that any fraction of an hour is billed as a complete one, and they change the economics of ordinary domestic plumbing completely.
Work through what that does. A washer change takes twenty minutes and bills as an hour. A job that runs to sixty five minutes bills as two. If two separate small faults are attended on the same visit and each is timed separately, you can be billed two hours for ninety minutes of work. None of this is dishonest and none of it is hidden, exactly. It is disclosed in the terms, it is industry-standard, and almost nobody reads it before booking.
The consequence is that a plumber advertising a lower rate billed in whole hours will very often cost you more on a typical domestic call than one advertising a higher rate billed in actual time, because the typical domestic call is short. Comparing the two headline numbers will lead you to the wrong one. This is the single most useful thing anybody can tell you about plumbing pricing in this country and it takes one question to establish.
The same principle runs through the rest of the invoice. A deposit taken before diagnosis converts a diagnostic visit into a purchase, and once money has changed hands the conversation about whether the job is even yours to do gets noticeably harder. A parts total with no itemisation cannot be questioned, not because anything is wrong with it, but because you have nothing to question it against. In both cases the issue is not the amount. It is that the structure removes your ability to ask.
So ask four questions before anybody comes out, of us or of anyone else. What is the call-out and what does it cover? Is labour billed in actual time or in whole hours? Are parts itemised separately on the invoice? And is anything payable before the fault has been identified? Any plumber worth having will answer all four on the phone without hesitating.
Ask these of anybody, including us. The answers matter more than the rate.

This page deliberately explains the structure rather than printing a number that goes stale, because the structure is what catches people out and the number rarely is. If any plumber will not give you both a call-out figure and an hourly rate over the phone before attending, that on its own tells you something worth knowing.

The distinction matters: diagnosis is real work, often the most skilled part of the job, and pretending it is free simply means it gets recovered somewhere less visible. What a call-out should never be is money taken before anybody has established what the job is, or whether it is even a plumbing job.
It means any fraction of an hour is billed as a whole one. A rate advertised at a given figure per hour or part thereof turns a twenty minute washer change into a full hour on the invoice, and a job running to sixty five minutes into two. Those three words move more money than the headline rate does, and they are usually in smaller type than it. Ask every plumber you speak to whether their rate is billed in full hours or in actual time, and get the answer before they arrive.
For work that can be priced from a clear description or a photograph, no. For anything needing someone on site to establish what is actually wrong, the call-out applies, because at that point it is diagnostic work rather than a sales visit. What we will not do is take a deposit before the job has been identified. If you describe a problem and it turns out to belong to a damp proofer, a roofer or the utility, we will tell you that and there is nothing to pay.
Per point pricing applies to new installation work rather than repairs, and a point is one terminated plumbing position: a basin, a toilet, a shower, a sink. The reason quotes differ so widely on the same house is that the word covers different things for different contractors. Ask specifically whether the figure includes hot and cold, whether it includes the waste, whether chasing walls is in or out, and whether the fitting itself is included. See plumbing installations.

The margin covers carrying stock on a vehicle so that a job finishes today instead of tomorrow, which is genuinely worth something to you. What it should not do is hide. If a part appears on your invoice at several times what the merchant down the road charges and there is no itemisation to show it, you have no way of even asking the question, and that is the point of itemising.
Because somebody is working at nine on a Sunday evening instead of being at home, and because attending your emergency means not attending a scheduled job. The rate is higher and it is told to you before anyone sets off rather than presented afterwards. We will also tell you when your problem does not need it. Being charged an out-of-hours premium for something that could safely have waited until Monday is avoidable, and the person best placed to tell you that is the person you are calling.
Because an invoice reading only "plumbing work" is close to useless when you need it to do anything. An insurer assessing a water damage claim wants to see what failed, what was done and what the parts were. A body corporate needs to allocate a cost. A landlord needs to separate a repair from an improvement for tax. Beyond all of that, an itemised invoice is the only version you can actually check, and a bill nobody can question is a bill nobody has to justify.
