A gas certificate of conformity is a peculiar document, because for most of its life it does absolutely nothing. It sits in a drawer. Nobody looks at it. The hob works whether it exists or not, and an installation without one behaves in daily use exactly like an installation with one. That is precisely what makes it so easy to skip, and it is why quotes that quietly omit it can look more competitive than quotes that include it.
The document has exactly one moment, and it is the worst moment. There has been a fire, or an explosion, or damage serious enough to be claimed for. An assessor is now going through your policy and your property, and one of the things they are entitled to establish is whether the gas installation was carried out and certified by somebody registered to do it. At that point the certificate either exists and holds, or it does not and you are arguing.
Two things make this sharper than people expect. The first is that a certificate is only as good as the registration standing behind it on the day it was issued. Registration lapses, and a certificate written on a lapsed number is decorative rather than protective. The second is that a certificate describes the installation as it was inspected, so an installation that has since been altered is no longer the installation that was certified.
That second point catches out more people than the first, and almost always in the same way: somebody moves the gas bottles. The old spot was in the way, or looked untidy, or was awkward for the delivery, so the cylinders get shifted a few metres to somewhere more sensible. But bottle position is governed by distance rules from doors, windows, drains and ignition sources, because LPG is heavier than air and pools at low points rather than dispersing. A relocation that looks like tidying can turn a compliant installation into a non-compliant one in ten minutes, and the certificate in the drawer no longer describes what is on your property.
So do two things. Ask for the installer's registration number and go and verify it before you pay, and if anything about the installation changes afterwards, including where the bottles stand, get it recertified. Neither costs much next to what a declined claim costs.

It depends on the run, the number of appliances and whether a bottle enclosure has to be built, and you get an itemised quote covering all three before anything starts. The certificate is included in that quote rather than added afterwards as an extra, which is worth checking against any other quote you hold. A gas quote that does not mention the certificate at all is a quote for an installation you may not be able to insure.
Yes. A certificate of conformity issued by a registered installer is required for gas installations, and it is required again when a property changes hands. That is the legal position and it binds everybody equally, us included. The practical position is sharper still: your insurer is entitled to ask for it after a fire, and an installation without one is an installation you will struggle to claim on at precisely the moment the claim matters most.
Ask for the registration number and verify it directly with the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Safety Association of Southern Africa before you pay. As with plumbing registration, what matters is that it is current on the day your certificate is issued rather than at some point in the past. We give the number without being asked and tell you to check it, which invites you to check on us specifically, and that is the intention.
The certificate records that the installation complied on the day it was inspected, so it is not a licence that runs for a fixed term regardless of what happens afterwards. If the installation is altered, if an appliance is added or moved, or if the property is sold, a new certificate is required. Any competent installer will tell you this rather than let you believe a single certificate covers a system indefinitely through whatever changes get made to it.
Please do not, and this is the item people most often get wrong. A cylinder relocated somewhere tidier is one of the commonest ways a compliant installation silently becomes a non-compliant one, and it invalidates the certificate you already hold.
For cooking it is straightforwardly useful, because a gas hob works when the power does not and that is worth a great deal in a house full of people. For water heating the case is more mixed and depends on how much you actually use. What is genuinely worth thinking about on this coast is a holiday property: a house occupied for six weeks a year has a different payback calculation from one occupied all year, and the sums often do not work the way people assume.
Leave every switch exactly as it is, lights included, and keep phones out of your hands until you are outside. Close the cylinder valve if you can reach it safely, open doors and windows, get everybody out, and call the gas supplier's emergency line from outside and away from the property. That call comes before ours. Once the immediate situation is safe we can attend, trace the leak properly with the right equipment, and put it right.
We can inspect it and certify it if it complies, and we will tell you plainly if it does not. What we will not do is issue a certificate for an installation that fails, however awkward the timing is, because that certificate carries the installer's registration and is a statement of fact rather than a formality. If it needs work to comply, you get the list of what and why, and you are free to have somebody else do the remedial work.
