Most people picture a sewer as something that works by gravity: waste leaves the house, runs downhill, and eventually arrives at a treatment works under its own steam. On flat ground that is broadly true. On this coast it is not. Ballito is built across a run of ridges and valleys dropping to the sea, and a system like that cannot be gravity-fed the whole way. Substantial parts of it are pumped, which means substantial parts of it depend on electricity.
That dependency is not a theoretical weakness. In February 2025 a generator changeover switch failed at the pump station on Hilary Drive during an unplanned power outage, and the result was a sewage spill at Willard Beach. Siza Water's maintenance manager, Kimolin Venkatasen, said at the time that the outage happened during peak operational hours and significantly limited their response, and added something more revealing: that frequent power outages continue to challenge the infrastructure, exceeding the original design specifications of the system.
Read that carefully, because it describes your drain as much as theirs. The network was designed on the assumption of reasonably continuous power. It is not getting reasonably continuous power. When a station stops and the standby set does not pick up cleanly, nothing is moving waste out of that catchment, and the level in the network starts to rise. It has to go somewhere, and it goes to the lowest opening it can find.
Which is very often somebody's gully, somebody's shower tray, or somebody's downstairs toilet, on the lowest stand in the street. Nothing whatsoever is wrong with that property's plumbing. The householder simply happens to own the lowest hole in a system that has temporarily stopped emptying. Rodding that drain will achieve nothing, and paying somebody to rod it will achieve slightly less than nothing.
So before you call anyone, ask three questions. Did it start when the power went off? Is more than one fitting affected at once? Does a neighbour lower down the slope have it too? A straightforward clearing from an accessible inspection chamber is charged as a call-out plus labour, and you get that figure on the phone before anyone sets off. Two things change it and both are told to you before we start: if the chamber has to be located and dug to, and if the blockage turns out to be a collapse rather than an obstruction, because a collapse is an excavation and not an unblocking. What we will not do is start at one price and finish at another.

No. Caustic drain products generate heat, sit against whatever they cannot dissolve, and do real damage to older PVC joints and to the rubber seals in modern fittings. Because a blockage that recurs in one spot is not really a blockage, it is a symptom of something structural at that point: a root at a joint, a partial collapse, a section laid at too shallow a fall, or a build-up of fat that has set hard on a pipe wall. Another clearance simply resets the clock for a few months. A camera inspection shows you the actual defect and, just as importantly, which side of the boundary it sits on.
The connection point decides it. Everything from your fittings to the boundary connection is the property owner's, and the main beyond it belongs to the utility. The inspection chamber near your boundary is what tells the two apart, and it usually does so in about thirty seconds: if it is running clear and the blockage is upstream in your yard, the job is yours. If the chamber itself is surcharged and backing up, the problem is downstream of you and it is not yours to pay for.
Fat, nearly always. It leaves the sink as a warm liquid, travels a little way, cools, and sets on the pipe wall. Each time the bore gets slightly narrower until the day something ordinary will not pass. Rinsing with hot water does not solve this, it simply moves the point at which the fat sets further down the line, which is why the problem tends to migrate outward over time rather than disappear. The fix is mechanical removal, and then not putting fat down there.
